Pete Rimmer.
Donovan Songs is a Web site to let you know about the CD Donovan Songs.
My album
is simply, a whole CD of songs writen by Donovan Leitch, one of the most popular singer/songwriters of the 60s and early 70s.
It
features 13 songs, everything from a couple of the big hits he had in the 60s such as Mellow Yellow and Catch the Wind to lesser
known songs such as The Ferryman Daughter,Sand and Foam,Voyage to the Moon and plenty of others from his various
albums.
The songs are played in a gentle Donovan
style on guitars,bass,fiddle,viola,whistles,mandolins
and recorders.
You will see elsewhere on the site of how to get hold of a copy.
If you like Donovan you will
enjoy this CD.
Donovan is of course still playing gigs and recording new music.Sadly
his 2007 tour appears to have been cancelled.

PETE RIMMER – DONOVAN SONGS
These are the sleevenotes for the CD
Donovan is a quiet, intimate performer but compared to Pete Rimmer, he’s
Ozzy Osbourne. For over 30 years, Pete has been singing gentle acoustic ballads around Merseyside including a long-lasting
residency at the Bothy Folk Club in Southport.
His repertoire comes from the singer/songwriters of the late 60s/ early 70s – Donovan, James Taylor, Jim Croce –
but he also has written fine songs of his own. Some of them can be heard on his 1999 CD, Fill
My Pockets…With Rain. Pete is also an enthusiast organiser of music events, and the folk festival in Ormskirk has
been a considerable success.
In 1965 Donovan was marketed as the UK’s
answer to Bob Dylan and to many, he has never lost that tag. The melody of his first hit single, ‘Catch The Wind’,
was a close cousin to Dylan’s ‘Chimes Of Freedom’, but Dylan didn’t object and they became friends
on his UK tour. But Donovan’s music developed very differently
to Dylan’s. Indeed, his albums are unlike anybody else’s, often straying into Celtic mythology and yet retaining
his hippie mystique. He lives in his own space and at his own pace. To quote one of his song titles, ‘Slow Down World’.
Donovan has made some delightful albums including What’s Bin Did And What’s Bin Hid (1965), Fairy Tale (1965),
Sunshine Superman (1967), A Gift From A
Flower To A Garden (1968) and his children’s album, HMS Donovan (1971).
All these albums are represented here with three songs coming from Flower To A Garden
– ‘The Tinker And The Crab’, ‘Lullaby Of Spring’ and ‘Isle Of Islay’.
Pete Rimmer knows Donovan’s work as well as the Scottish troubadour himself
and so there are unusual choices here, perhaps songs that you’ve not heard before. There’s ‘Catch The Wind’
and ‘Mellow Yellow’ but this is no Greatest Hits tribute. Relatively
few people know ‘The Ferryman’s Daughter’ from Live In Japan
or ‘Hampstead Incident’ (from the Sunshine Superman LP). This is the
first solo tribute CD to Donovan: there are none of Donovan’s rockers here and I wish Pete had called it Quiet Flows The Don.
When Pete brought the demo of Donovan Songs
to my house, I had been playing the soundtrack to West Side Story. When the romantic
lead repeats the name of his beloved, Maria, he says, “Say it soft and it’s almost like praying.” The same
could be said of Pete Rimmer’s singing.
Oh, and Pete, whatever happened to the ‘Intergalactic Laxative’?
